Why I Care About Community Colleges
Maricopa Community Colleges are in my blood
My mom graduated from Phoenix College after our family first moved to the Valley in 1958
My dad, a lifelong Career & Technical Education leader, taught me that Maricopa County had the best community colleges in the nation
I’ve attended Glendale, Mesa, Rio Salado, and Paradise Valley Community Colleges and then earned my Associate's degree from Arizona Western College. A grand tour.
As a high school teacher for 27 years, I encouraged my students to continue their education at our local community college.
My Stance on Football in Community Colleges
I support examining how football can return as part of a stronger athletics program that creates opportunities for both men and women.
My opponent talks about what football once accomplished, but he has not presented a plan addressing why it was eliminated. Ignoring those lessons would put both students and the program’s future at risk. We must be financially responsible, especially in these tough times.
That's why any proposal must include equitable athletic opportunities, enforceable academic and persistence standards, adequate healthcare and athletic-training support, and independent compliance oversight. A draft district review previously identified serious concerns involving football’s cost, persistence, compliance record, insurance exposure and deteriorating facilities. All of that will cost significant taxpayer dollars to restore.
